Transcript Genetics: Phenotype and Genotype - science 6

What is a Phenotype?
is any observable characteristic or
trait of an organism
Phenotypes result from as well as
the mixture of genes and the
product of it.
To better understand it…
In Mendelian genetics the dominant
trait is the phenotype and in this
example it is the big B in Bb
Science Vocabulary!
Allele- (from the greek
word allelos meaning each
other) is one of two or more
forms of the DNA sequence
of a particular gene.
Homozygous- having 2
identical alleles of a
particular gene
Heterozygous (a.k.a.
hybrids)- having 2 different
alleles of a particular gene
What is a
genotype?
The genotype is the
genetic constitution
of the dominant and
resistant (i.e. the
specific allele makeup
of the individual)
usually with reference
to a specific character
under consideration
In a few words it is…
Genotype is the inherited gene
combination
It is like a message in the genes
Genetic make-up of an organism
So do we now know how
to differentiate Phenotype
and Genotype?
Geno or Pheno?
The flowers are purple
Phenotype
OR
Genotype
Geno or Pheno?
Genetic Code: Pp
Genotype
Or
Phenotype
Let’s make it
a little
harder…
Legend:
B is for blue eyes
G is for grey eyes
If Katniss’ genetic code
is Gb, that would mean
the phenotype would be
________
Blue Eyes
Blue-Grey
Eyes
Grey
Eyes
Legend:
B is for blue eyes
G is for grey eyes
If Peeta’s genetic
code is BB that
would mean the
phenotype would be
________
Blue-Grey
Eyes
Blue Eyes
Grey Eyes
The HARD questions
Josh is homozygous for night blindness.
What is his genotype? ___________
Scarlet is heterozygous for night
blindness. What is her
genotype?____________ Is she night
blind?___________.
Well Done!
Remember the differences between
phenotype and genotype.
