AIM
To determine the beliefs significantly associated with the
consumption and no consumption of tobacco in school
students in Spain.
METHOD
The sample is 1324 students, 48% (n = 631) male, mean
age 14.89 (SD=3.12).
 Was given a "Pre-Chat Survey on Drug Addiction;
during 2007-2008", elaborated by the professionals of the
Plan Municipal de Drogodependencias (PMD) of the
Ayuntamiento de Valencia; administered in 21 schools in
the Valencia City.
It was applied logistical regressions, using as covariable
the age, to determine the association among each one of
the beliefs with three dependent variables related to
smoking tobacco: i) occasional consumption (eg.
weekends), ii) daily consumption, and iii) not to have
consumed it.
 Beliefs potentially associated
consumed the tobacco are:
Responding
negatively "if you
control nothing
happens" (OR=2.84)
It has negative
effects on health
(OR=2.00)
Causes family,
labour, scholar or
social problems
(OR=1.78)
not
having
It causes many
accidents (labour,
traffic, etc.)
(OR=1.88)
Harms people of
surroundings
(OR=1.96)
NOT HAVING
CONSUMED THE
TOBACCO
It can cause mental
illnesses
(OR=1.80)
RESULTS
with
To respond
negatively that “it
doesn’t cause
problems”
(OR=3.05)
Sometimes can lead
to commit crimes
(OR=2.02)
 Among those that answer to consume occasionally (e.g.
weekends), the associated beliefs are:
CONCLUSIONS
CONSUME
OCCASIONALLY
TOBACCO
(e.g. weekends)
If you control
nothing happens
(OR=3.66)
It does not cause
problems
(OR=2.54)
It does not harms people
of surroundings
(OR=1.77)

Surveys conducted by: Serrano, A.; Benito, B.
Sense of control on consumption, and beliefs that
smoking does not harms people of surroundings and
does not cause other problems are with high potential
related to occasionally consumption in youth. On other
hand, beliefs with potential to induce resiliency on
smoking are that smoking causes negative effects on
physical and mental health, causes problems or accidents
in many life areas (scholar, labour, traffic, etc) and in
people of surroundings, plus the perception that negative
effects can occur also when is perceived that the
consumption is control.
