By high school graduation, students
will have seen about 350,000 TV
commercials.

In 1971, cigarette advertisements on TV were
banned by federal law.
In 1998, the largest tobacco companies in the
United States settled a series of lawsuits with
the governments of 46 states. The tobacco
companies agreed to pay approximately $206
billion over 25 years for tobacco prevention.
- This required tobacco companies to remove all
billboard advertising and advertising in sports
arenas by 1999.
- The tobacco companies promised to stop using
cartoon characters to sell cigarettes and stop
distributing “gear” such as shirts and hats with
tobacco logos.

the ad business is to “let the product be
the hero”
One of the ways to get us to buy things
is to point out a problem we may have
and then offer us products as a solution
to that problem.
