Pre-World War II
 The economy was not very good. People had food shortages and spent their 360 yen
that they got a month on very basic food.
 People were shunned when they indulged in luxuries like rice, bean paste, sugar and
vinegar because it was considered unpatriotic.
 Prices on food was 20% higher than before the war, and very few citizens could




afford that.
There government and economy was horrible.
Before WW II, of course, Japan was one of the avanced countries,
However, the production capital was totally destroyed by bombing during the war.
With little production capacity the Japanese population was near the starvation.
Post-World War II
 Japans economy got a whole lot better because of the United States.
 The American government, under the auspices of the Supreme Commander




of the Allied Powers played a crucial role in Japan’s initial economic
recovery.
Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers officials believed economic
development could not only democratize Japan but also prevent the
reemergence of militarism, and communism.
Even after the Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers departed Japan
continued to improve and grow there economy, because of the help of the
Unite States.
United State paid for military procurement and continued to make gains.
By the 1960 Japans had risen from its ashes and had been stronger and
better since the time of the Sun Goddess.
Japan Today
 Toward the end of 1960s, Japan's economic growth accelerated and was




accompanied by large trade surpluses, which indicated that the yen fixed at 360
per dollar since 1949, had become undervalued.
It took several years for Japan to reallocate resources from unconditionally
growth-oriented sectors to energy-saving sectors.
Japan finally caught up with the United States and the Western European
Countries technologically at some point in the mid 1970s.
Today Japan is the third largest economy in the world by nominal GDP and the
second highest develop economy.
Japan evolve tremendously over a short period of time technologically and
economically.
