Demographics
Why are some countries more
developed than others?
Your Theory

Write a theory that gives at least one
reason why some countries are more
developed than others.

Demographics are numbers (statistics)
that tell us about the level of
development.
Geographers look at how demographic
information like population growth,
population density, birth rate, life
expectancy, literacy rate, per capita GDP
to understand the overall health, wealth
and development of a country
Section Outline
Outline chapter 3 section 1 of your Prentice Hall
World Geography text book.
Use an idea map/web format with the word
“population” in the center.
1. Draw three spokes out from the word
population and write the main ideas from (bold
red headings) at the end of each line.
2. Create more branches off the main spokes by
using the green subheadings.
3. fill in details around the branches with details
from the body of the text. Keep in mind that
nouns that answer the question what, where,
when, who are usually important details that can
be connected to the subheadings
World Population Cartogram
A cartogram distorts land to match some demographic variable. In
this case the size of the country is in proportion to it’s population
Distribution of World Population
Over one
half of the
world’s
population
lives in
Asia
Population Growth by Region
Africa doesn’t have
the most people but
it is the fastest
growing continent.
At present growth
rates of By 2050
the countries of
Africa will have a
combined
population of over 2
billion.
In 1950 there were
two Europeans for
every African. In
2050 there will be
two African’s for
every European.

populations on your map
Arithmetic Density
Divide the number
of people in a
place by the
size of the place
 Example:
United States
Population (300
million) divided
by it’s land size
(3,717,796
square miles)
Answer: 80.69 people per square mile in the United States

How Accurate is Arithmetic
Density?
Is population distributed evenly?
What might cause populations to
cluster closer together or spread
further apart?
access to water
arable soil
landforms
What kinds of climate do most
people live in?
Population Density
World Climates
Physiological Density
Physiological density is the number of people per arable land area.
This is a good measure of the relation between population and
agricultural resources in a society.
What makes populations grow?
Populations grow when births are high and
deaths are low.
What causes the changes in each stage?

Demographic Comparisons
Assignment
Objective: Determine which countries are
developed, developing and less developed.
Instructions:
1-Choose one country from the list of
countries on the data chart.
2-Compare it’s birthrate, infant mortality,
life expectancy, literacy and per capita
GDP with the examples on the sheet titled
“Demographic Comparisons.”
3. Write that country under the example
that it matches most closely in at least
three categories.
