Economic System
• France has a mixed economy.
• After the industrial revolution France decided to close it’s doors to foreign
markets in order to protect it’s own industries. This allowed for the economy
to shift from a command economy to a mix of command and market
economy.
• Today France’s government has devised an economic development plan with
the hopes of boosting Frances in economy for future generations.
• It’s economy is ranked 75th in the world.
GDP
• Frances GDP ( Gross Domestic Product) is $2.6 trillion US dollars.
• Frances GDP goes up about 0.4% every year.
• The GDP per capita is $40,375.
Natural Resources and Land Use
• France, in comparison to other well resourced countries, have a
limited supply of natural resources.
• Such as: coal, iron ores, bauxite, and uranium.
• While France does not have a lot of natural resources they do have
high quality rich soil that covers most of the countries land. This
makes France a large exporter of farmed food.
• Farms and forests cover 48 million hectares - 82% - of the total area of
mainland France.
Industries
• France is one of the world’s most popular destinations
to visit allowing it to boost a high tourism industry.
• About 75 million people visit France a year.
• Other major industries include: Aerospace,
automotive, pharmaceuticals, industrial machinery,
food and fashion.
Literacy Rate and Unemployment Rate
• Literacy: How many people over the age of 15 can read and write?
• 99% of the population is literate.
• How many people are unemployed in France?
• Around 10% of people in France are unemployed.
History
• 1804-1814 - Napoleon crowns himself emperor of First French
Empire; series of military successes brings most of continental Europe
under his control.
• 1870-71 - Franco-Prussian War, ending in French defeat, loss of
Alsace-Lorraine and end of the Second Empire; Third Republic lasts
until 1940.
• 1914-18 World War I - Massive casualties in trenches in north-east
France; 1.3 million Frenchmen are killed and many more wounded by
the end of the war.
• 1919 - Peace Treaty of Versailles. France regains Alsace-Lorraine;
Germany agrees to reparations.
• 1939-45 - World War II - Germany occupies much of France. Vichy
regime in unoccupied south collaborates with Nazis. General de
Gaulle, undersecretary of war, establishes government-in-exile in
London and, later, Algiers. Rise of French Resistance.
• 1951 - France joins West Germany and other European nations in the
European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) - leading to the formation
in 1957 of the European Economic Community (EEC).
