Saving the Daughters
How can we decrease the number of
female infants in orphanages, stop
selective abortion, and ultimately
balance the gender ratios in China?
A Brief History
Confucious
“Women and people of
low birth are very hard
to deal with. If you are
friendly with them, they
get out of hand.”
-Confucious
Chinese Philosopher
551-479 BCE
The One-Child-Per-Couple Rule
. . . Unless you’re rich, a minority, or (maybe) having a girl.
Exceptions to the Policy
56 Nations in China
The One-Child Policy doesn’t
apply to ethnic minorities.
Consequences for Families
1983-’91: 30 million forcibly sterilized
Chinese women
1987: 1 in 8 married Chinese women
were forced to have 2nd-3rd trimester
abortions.
Loss of employment
The Girls’ Punishments
97.5% of Chinese abortions are female.
Neglect and other methods kill more--In one
village, 40 baby girls were drowned in one
year.
Other female
babies are
left on
doorsteps, in
markets, and
in bus stops.
They go to
orphanages.
New Ratios
•1992: 1.7 million girls just
aren’t there.
•Healthy boy:girl ratio at birth:
105:100
•1996: 36 million more boys in
China than girls.
•China’s boy:girl ratio at birth:
120:100
Translation: Babies grow up and get married, except for the 36 million
boys for whom there aren’t any girls.
Regional
Responsibilities
Early Solution Suggestion
1992 Law on Protection of
Rights and Interests of
Women: “. . . drowning,
abandoning or cruel
infanticide in any manner
of female babies shall be
prohibited; discrimination
against or maltreatment of
women who gave birth to
female babies. . . shall be
prohibited.”
It didn’t help much.
