• Dominant mode of transport for freight
• Contributes 4.5% to GDP
• Grew at 9.5% in last six years
• Carries 87% and 61% of passenger and freight

• Grew at 11% CAGR (1951-2004)
• 80% are personalized vehicles
• Share of buses reduced from 11% (1951) to 1%
(2004)

• Connect all major centers of production

• 56% and 32% are two or one laned
• 12% are four laned

• Upgradation through 235430 crore investment

• Upgradation and maintenance done by state
