Region
• There are three basic types of regions.
• Formal regions are those defined by governmental or
administrative boundaries (i. e., United States,
Birmingham, Brazil). These regional boundaries are not
open to dispute, therefore physical regions fall under this
category (i. e., The Rockies, the Great Lakes States).
• Functional regions are those defined by a function (i. e.,
TVA, United Airlines Service area or a newspaper service
area). If the function ceases to exists, the region no longer
exists.
• Vernacular regions are those loosely defined by people's
perception (i. e., The South, The Middle East).

What is Human Environment Interaction?
Well it asks certain questions.
1. How do people use their environment?
2. How have they changed the
environment?
• 3. What are the consequences of the
changes they have made?
• 4. How have they adapted to changes in
their environment.
Human/Environment
• Make it simple!
• It is how humans interact with the
environment
• Examples
Location
• There are two types of location:
– Absolute
– Relative
– These will be discussed in a further lecture
Place
• A Place is a description of what
it is like, rather than the
location.
• There are two ways the
geographers describe a place.
• Physical and Human
Characteristics
Physical Place
• include things that occur naturally,
such as mountains, rivers, type of
soil, wildlife, climate.
Physical
Human Characteristics
• are things that have changed due to
people, such as roads and buildings, how
people live and their traditions
