Motherboard
By : Zachary Picht and Bailey Germain
What is a Motherboard?
• A computer motherboard is the backbone of any system. Without it you
would have no computer.
• A motherboard sometimes alternatively known as the mainboard, system
board, planar board or logic board is the main printed circuit board (PCB)
found in computers and other technological systems. It holds many of the
electronic components of the system, such as the CPU and memory.
• Motherboard specifically refers to a PCB with expansion capability - the
board is the "mother" of all components attached to it, which often
include sound cards, video cards, network cards, hard drives, TV tuner
cards, cards providing extra USB or Firewire slots, and a variety of other
custom components.
What does the Motherboard do?
• The motherboard is the primary source that
links your computer processor unit (CPU),
your memory, and hardware.
How does a Motherboard work?
• A motherboard works by providing the electrical
connections by which the other components of the
system communicate through the central processing
unit . An important component of a motherboard is
the microprocessor's supporting chipset, which
provides the supporting interfaces between the CPU
and the various buses and external components. This
chipset determines the features and capabilities of
the motherboard.
What does the Motherboard look like?
Signs that a Motherboard might
have something wrong with it?
Failure symptoms
Everything powers on but you can't see a live screen,
Computer turns on for just a few seconds then turns off,
Some peripherals work others don't, System shuts off
randomly.
CMOS
Solutions
whenever your BIOS fails to register a new component
and you are sure it's the motherboard: Check the cable
connections, Reset the CMOS (A battery powered
memory chip that stores setup information), Update the
BIOS (Basic Input/Output System).
Failure Reasons
Electricity and voltage spikes, Dust, smoke, Age, Fan
failure or heating issues, Force or pressure.
BIOS
Cost to replace a motherboard
To replace a motherboard costs around $250$650 on average.
