SBIR Phase I
• One challenge of DOE GNEM Program is obtaining accurate
locations over broad areas
• Obtaining accurate locations over broad areas requires GT
data providing accurate epicenter and OT
• We are developing a Ground-Truth Monitoring System
(GTMS)
consisting of an inexpensive, lightweight smart
sensor unit that
can be mailed to and emplaced near large
mining regions
The Challenge*
• Monitoring Goals (standoff distance < 5 km)
• 1 km epicentral distance
• 0.1 second origin time
• 0.3 magnitude units
• Hardware Goals
• System cost < $1000
• Weight < 1 lb
• Autonomous operation for 6 months
• Onboard processing to locate and characterize events
* Large Mining Explosions
How do we achieve these goals?
