Light Absorption
Green reflected
Red, Orange, Yellow, Blue, Violet
absorbed into the leaf
• With leaves, green light reflected (so we see green
leaves)
• Reds and blues most used in photosynthesis
Photosynthesis
Overview
• Defined:
Production of sugar
& oxygen from
CO2, water, &
sunlight
• Endergonic
reaction: Reaction
that requires energy
• Who: Autotrophs
(Plants, algae, some
bacteria)
• End Result: Sugar
& oxygen waste
Stage 1: Light Dependent (Light Reactions)
• Where: Thylakoid membranes of chloroplast
• What happens?
1) Sunlight converted into ATP energy
2) Water atoms (H2O) broken apart
• Hydrogen (H2) kept for later use
• Oxygen (O) is released as a waste
• How: Sunlight causes electrons of chlorophyll to detach
– Free electrons causes ATP to bond
• End Result: ATP, H2, Oxygen waste
Stage 2: Light Independent (Dark Reaction)
• Where: Stroma (fluid interior) of chloroplast
• What happens? ATP (from light reaction) creates sugars
• How?
C OO H
– ATP breaks apart CO2 + H2
– Bunch of unstable C’s, O’s, and H’s recombine into C6H12O6
(Glucose)
– End result: Glucose created by all autotrophs
Connection between photosynthesis & respiration
• Plants
– Create their own glucose
through photosynthesis
– That glucose is used during
respiration to make ATP for
the plant’s cells
• Animals
– Animals eat plants to obtain
their glucose
– Plant glucose is used by
animal cells to make ATP
during the respiration process
