Myth started when the primitive man, facing phenomena such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions,
lightning, asked himself who had made these things happen.
He thought that maybe there was someone greater than him, a god that created him and
punished him when he had done something wrong. Similarly several myths arose to explain
everything that he could not be able to explain with the knowledge he had at that time.
Different populations had often similar myths, in some cases because such populations got in
touch with each other, in others because different populations found similar explanations to the
same phenomenon. For instance, the myth of creation is more or less tha same in Jewish
tradition and in Sudan: in both cases, man became mortal because he had sinned.
Myths were then used to explain several things: the origin of man, the reason of mortality, how
man learned to dominate fire and so on.
All the questions that primitive man asked himself were generated by his will to know who he was
and where he came from, how the world in which he was sent to had been created, and why he
was sent there. The most natural question that primitive man likely asked himself was : “who
created me?” This question led to the invention of the mythology of creation. In all the myths of
this kind it may be found a god creating the world, with earth and oceans, the sky, the stars and
the moon, the sun and all the species living on the earth: plants, animals and the human being.
Usually man has something more than animals: “a spark of divine”, that is a “good” gift received
by god but also a “bad” one, because it impies a struggle between the divine and the animal part
of the man.
In conclusion, myths are a sort of tales created to explain something that pimitive men could not
explain to themselves.
