an invasive species. Take a look
at the video and explain what
this term means?

GOALS
• Analyze the threats posed
by invasive species
• Compare invasive to native
species.
YOUR TASK: Alien Invaders
Groups of 4: Each group gets a game board
-2 people: Choose a Native Species
-2 people: Choose an Invasive Species
Part 1: on the game board
YOU HAVE 25 MINUTES

species?

• The Asian Carp is an invasive species moving
up The Mississippi River. Watch the video and
explain what kind of damage these fish can
cause?
YOUR TASK: Catch those Carp
After a number of serious injuries from the Asian Carp, Mississipppi River Officials
are concerned the problem is getting out of control. They have formulated a list of
potential solutions, but need you to rank them in order of efficiency.
PART 2: GROUPS of 2: On A whiteboard
- Rank the solutions in order of EFFICIENCY.

• What are effective ways of limiting the spread
of the Asian carp?

Methods of Limiting The Spread of Invasive Species
USE YOUR NOODLE:
• Native species often outnumber invasive
species. However within 5 to 10 years,
Invasive Species severely outnumber the
native species. How does this occur?
USE YOUR NOODLE:
• The invasion of the Asian Shore crab was
traced back to a New Jersey port where
international cargo ships were dumping
ballast water they pumped into their ships
while in Asia. How did this lead to the
introduction of the Asian Shore crab on the
east coast?
REFLECTION:
• You have been given 50,000 dollars by the EPA
to combat the spread of invasive species.
Formulate a plan that could be used to help
stop the spread of these harmful organisms.
