Competition
• Competition can occur between animals of the same species or
between different species. Variations between the animals is a big
factor on who will win. The other animal must move adapt to this
situation to avoid or reduce competition they alter their niche .Ex.
Mule deer and white tail deer. Cougar and lynx can live in the same
niche. How?
warbler
• Pg 18
• These warbler all live in the same tree but
they not share their niche so they not
compete with each other.
Niches
• There are two types of niches. They are the
broad niche and a narrow niche. A broad niche
is vast in land but small in the different types of
animals that live in it. Northern Canada is a
broad niche. These animals can live here year
around so they adapt to seasonal changes. Hot
summers to drastic cold in the winter they have
adaptations which allow to survive. These types
of animals are called Generalists. Generalists
can survive over large areas.
Niches
• A narrow niche is much different than a broad
niche. You would find a narrow niche in tropical
area where seasons do not change. The amount
of different types of species in these niches is
vast, but they can not tolerate a large area .It
can be so small a couple of centimeters on tree
branch could cause this species to die. These
species are called specialist. This specialization
allows many animals to live in a small area.
• (Discuss Trap of specialization)
Symbiotic Relationships
• We need to have communities of micro
organisms to help us survive( digestive system)
These micro-organisms help us in digestion in
food and we supply them with a place to live.
This a mutualism relationship because we both
benefit from it. We also have commensalism
relationships where one species benefits and
the other does not. Parasitism is where one
species benefits and the other is harmed.
