Distribution
First discovered in 1960 in Florida.
Hydrilla was just a simple weed that
lived in aquariums.
People started dumping it into
sewers which transferred it into
waters.
Effects On People
It has invaded native habitats.
It has clogged waterways.
Destroyed native species of flora and
fauna.
When people swim in rivers, they get
caught up in it and are stuck.
Very hard to clean it.
Effects On Ecosystems
Kills biotic organisms and abiotic things.
Native species died because Hydrilla by
how poisonous it is.
Coots eat the poisoned Hydrilla but are
not effected.
Eagles then eat the coots an eventually
die.
Over 100 different species have died and
disappeared because of this.

Reasons For success
• Kills and destroys other plants and/or fish
so it has a lot of room to reproduce.
• Reproduces in fresh water, ponds, rivers,
and canals.
• Hydrilla plants its stems into the water and
then each stem may produce up to 15
white to brownish rhizomes which grow
into Hydrilla.
Issues for the Future
► Very
hard to even try to kill all the Hydrilla
because it reproduces very fast.
► If people want to get rid of this weed, than
taking it out from the rivers is the first step.
