Intel Essentials
Spring 2011
Unit Summary
 Student in Cochise County are affected by the
happenings of the San Pedro Watershed. There is a
need to protect and preserve the area. Students will
look at the factors that are an important for the survival
of organisms at the San Pedro Watershed. They will be
tasked with the job of presenting information to the
board of the Upper San Pedro Partnership on whether
or not to introduce a species to the San Pedro
Watershed area. To determine this, students will need
to research the current endangered species that inhabit
the San Pedro so they can understand the limiting
factors. Students will end the unit with a multimedia
presentation to the board.
Vision of Love
By the end of this unit, students will have accomplished
the following:
 analyzed the limiting factors of living organisms
 evaluated data associated with population growth.
 constructed graphical displays to analyze change of
living organisms and their ecosystems.
Gauging Student Needs
 The standards that are being covered were chosen
from the AIMS standardized tests for 8th grade
students. These standards are from the areas in which
students are struggling the most.
 The first activity is a visual ranking activity. This
activity is designed as an introduction and to
determine what students already know about limiting
factors.

Science: Strand 4: Life Science, Concept 3: Populations of Organisms in an Ecosystem
PO 3. Analyze the interactions of living organisms with their ecosystems:
limiting factors
PO 4. Evaluate data related to problems associated with population growth (e.g.,
overgrazing, forest management, invasion of non-native species) and the possible
solutions.
PO 6. Create a model of the interactions of living organisms within an ecosystem.
Math: Strand 3: Patterns, Algebra, and Functions, Concept 4: Analysis of Change
PO 1. Use graphs and tables to model and analyze change
 Learning Objectives
Students will analyze the limiting factors of living organisms.
 Students will evaluate data associated with population growth.
 Students will construct graphical displays to analyze change of living organisms and their
ecosystems.

When is enough, enough?
 Unit Questions
 How has population changed the area of the San Pedro?
 What are some solutions to the lack of population
growth?
 Is it possible to add organisms to an environment with a
positive impact on the surrounding area?
 Content Questions
 What are endangered species?
 How do organisms survive in their environment?
 How do limiting factors affect living organisms?
