Saving Wild Species
Grade 11/12 Environmental Science
Miss Piercy and Mr Cameron
(aka: Afton and Hardy)
Introduction and Objectives
• What is a species at
risk?
• What did we do, what
can we do?
• Today’s lesson will
give you a better
understanding of
wildlife issues in
Canada
Name these species…which are at risk?
Who are they?
Eastern Wolf - Special concern — A wildlife species that may become
a threatened or an endangered species because of a combination of
biological characteristics and identified threats.
Phantom Orchid - Threatened — A wildlife species likely to become
endangered if limiting factors are not reversed.
Beluga Whale (Hudson Bay)- Endangered — A wildlife species
facing imminent extirpation or extinction.
Black Footed Ferret - Extirpated — A wildlife species no longer
existing in the wild in Canada, but occurring elsewhere.
Blue Walleye - Extinct — A wildlife species that no longer exists.

How did they get there?
• In groups, discuss and
list ways that you
think a species may
become at risk?
• Interbreeding
• Habitat destruction (human and
natural)
• Over hunting & harvesting
• Natural selection?
• Pollution
• Cosmetics
• Climate shifting
A dynamic nature & always changing
• Invasive species
• The wheel of “badness”!
Why this affects us?
• Every species has a job to do.
• All life is connected.
• Extinction and species loss is
happening more often, and
faster each day.
• Only half of our 140,000
species in Canada have been
identified.
What can you do?
• Be informed!
• Get involved!
