An organism that feeds on
and harms a living thing is
called a(n) __________.
A 100
Parasite
A 100
A species that is _________
has no living members.
A 200
extinct
A 200
___________ is the struggle
between organisms to meet their
needs.
A 300
Competition
A 300
A species that is at risk of
dying out is a(n) ________
species.
A 400
Endangered
A 400
_________ can be very harmful
to organisms and the
environment.
A 500
hazardous wastes
A 500
What would cause an ecosystem
to change quickly?
B 100
An earthquake
B 100
What might be the effect on an
ecosystem of a climate change
from rainy to dry?
B 200
A change in kinds of plants and
animals
B 200
What could scientists tell from a
fish fossil found in a desert?
B 300
The desert was once a sea or lake
B 300
What might be a reason an
animal becomes extinct?
B 400
Its habitat is destroyed
B 400
When a species becomes
extinct, what are some effects
on the ecosystem to which it
belonged?
B 500
Other organisms that depended on
it for food must find other sources;
if it ate other species, those species
could increase in population; new
species could move in.
B 500
How would an ecosystem change
if the rabbits that were the main prey
for foxes became sick and died?
C 100
The number of foxes would decrease.
C 100
A meadow has too many rabbits.
What would help balance this
ecosystem?
C 200
More foxes to eat the rabbits.
C 200
Why do chipmunks in the Great
Smoky Mountains survive?
C 300
All their needs are met in that
environment.
C 300

Place A Wager
DOUBLE
C 400
Why would an endangered or
threatened species leave an
area?
C 400
So that it can find a more
suitable environment to
survive and again increase in
population.
C 400
What describes a balanced ecosystem?
C 500
No animal or plant drives out
other animal or plants.
C 500
When species compete for a
particular resource, what
happens to the losers?
D 100
They will either die or move to a
difference area.
D 100
How can wolves successfully
hunt deer that are in a group?
D 200
Wolves can chase the group
and catch a slow-moving deer
or catch one at the edge of the
group.
D 200
What impact does a parasite have in
an ecosystem?
D 300
Hurts one organism and helps
another.
D 300
How are a hawk and an owl able
to succeed, even though they
compete for food?
D 400
One hunts at night, and the other
during the day
D 400
Explain the relationship between
parasites and hosts.
D 500
Parasites live on another
organism called a host. The
parasite uses the host as a source
of food and harms the host.
D 500
What is one way people can
disturb the balance of
ecosystems?
E 100
Building houses
E 100
What are some ways in which
humans pollute the air?
E 200
cars and factories release
pollutants into the air
E 200
How might humans return
some balance to ecosystems?
E 300
Reduce the amount of waste
put into the air, water and
land; plant more trees; leave
more open spaces; reduce the
use of chemical fertilizers
E 300
Why do humans have a great
impact on the environment?
E 400
Humans are able to change
large parts of the environment
to get food, shelter, and water.
They also affect ecosystems
with wastes.
E 400
What human activities
damage the environment?
E 500
cutting down forests, building
dams and roads, and mining
E 500
Why did the United States
establish national parks?
F 100
To preserve nature’s beauty and
habitats of plants and animals
F 100
How can damage from strip
mines be repaired?
F 200
Mining companies can replace
the soil
F 200
Name a National Park located
in the United States.
F 300
Yellowstone National Park,
Saguaro National Park,
Everglades National Park,
Okefenokee National Wildlife
Refuge
F 300
How has preservation of
national parks helped the
environment?
F 400
Natural habitats and living
organisms are protected.
F 400
Why do you think certain
areas have been set aside as
national parks?
F 500
To keep parts of our country
preserved to their original
state, as places we can visit,
study, and enjoy nature.

Harry and Tara are hiking in a forest.
Tara tells Harry that the forest was
probably a lake at one time. Harry
doesn't believe it. Explain why Tara is
right.
Click on screen to continue
Tara is right because of the process of
succession. A lake begins with no
living things, and then soil is carried
into the lake. The soil adds
organisms that help the lake support
small plants. Animals come to eat the
plants and the lake gradually fills
with soil. It becomes a marsh, and
when the marsh dries up, a forest
grows.
