You can find the marine biome in any
ocean or salt water habitat. There are
seven major oceans that make up most of
the marine biome. These include the
Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Artic and many
more.
Unique fact: The marine biome makes up 70% of the earths
water.
Precipitation and Climate
•
• The average
precipitation in the
marine biome is 60 to
250 inches.
The average
temperature in the
marine biome is 20 to
30 degrees
Fahrenheit in deep
places. The
temperature gets
warmer as you move
towards the equator
and closer to the
surface.
Unique fact: The precipitation and climate effects the organisms
habitats that live in the marine biome.
Growing season
• The growing season in the marine biome
isn’t like that of the terrestrial biomes.
• Since all plants are under water they grow
year round.
Unique fact: The plants are always growing in the marine biome.
Plants
• In the marine biome
you can find a variety
of different plants.
Some of these
include coral reefs,
kelp, algae, sea
grass, and
phytoplankton.
Unique fact: Plants in the marine biome are homes to
thousands of living organisms.
Coral reefs
• Coral reefs can be divided into two main
types: shelf reefs and oceanic reefs
• Shelf reefs are fringing reefs, platform
reefs, and barrier reefs.
• Oceanic reefs are found off the continental
shelf growing around the margins of
volcanic islands.
Unique fact: Coral reefs support a greater number
of fish and invertebrate species than any other
ocean ecosystem.
Algae
• Algae much like coral reefs can be divided into
different types which are green algae and red
coralline algae.
• Green Algae is able to survive in marine and
fresh water, damp soil, or snow and ice.
• Red Coralline Algae has the ability to
incorporate calcium carbonate into their cell
walls, this gives their bodies a rigid appearance
and texture.
Unique fact: Some algae may look and feel like carpet.
Phytoplankton and Kelp
Phytoplankton is a largely unicellular algae
that most marine animals feed on. They
are responsible for about half of the
oxygen on the earth’s atmosphere.
Kelp leaves are big brown blades that can
grow up to 50 feet. They have been
known to grow more than 100 feet long.
Unique fact: Kelp can be used to make toothpaste
and a variety of other products.
Kelp
• Laminderia is a
smaller type of kelp. It
is found along rocky
shores.
• Kelp houses a wide
variety of sea
creatures.
Unique fact: Some smaller types of kelp can grow to be 15 to 20
feet tall.
Sea Grass
• Sea grass is an
unusual marine
flowering plant with
long and narrow
leaves, often very
green. It grows in
large meadows that
look like an
underwater
grassland.
Animals
• There are many
different types of
animals living in the
marine biome.
• Some of these
include:
Whales, sailfish,
salmon, dolphins,
squid, marlin, and
shellfish.
Unique fact: There are thousands of
different varieties of animals in the
marine biome.
Whales
• Smaller species of the whale are known as
the toothed whales which include the
sperm whale, killer whale, pilot whale, and
the beluga whale.
• Larger species of the whale are the baleen
whales which includes the blue whale and
the humpback whale.
Unique fact: The whale is the largest living thing in the
marine biome.
