Change Over Time
Chapter 10, section1
Differences Between
Organisms

Adaptation = a characteristic that helps
an organism survive and reproduce in its
environment.
– May be physical or behavioral
– Let’s brainstorm some examples….
Species = group of organisms that can
mate and produce fertile offspring
 Evolution = process in which populations
change over time

Evidence of Changes over
time
Fossil Record = history of life as
indicated by traces of living things
 Scientists examine the fossil record to
obtain evidence of how organisms
have changed over time

Evidence of Ancestry
Fossil record provides evidence of
the order in which species existed
 Since organisms have characteristics
in common they must have come
from common ancestors
 Branching diagrams show the
relationships between organisms

Comparing Organisms

Comparative anatomy and
molecular biology provide proof
that organisms share common
ancestors.
– Comparative Anatomy : by studying
the structure of organisms scientists find
that related organisms share common
traits
What do you Notice?
Comparing Cont.

Comparing DNA: the more
similarities between the DNA of two
species, the more recently the two
shared a common ancestor.
