Welcome to
the wonders
of the human
stomach !
I just can’t
stomach it !
• prevents chyme from
returning up the esophagus
• aided in the task of
keeping the flow of
materials in one direction
by the diaphragm.

@responsible for secreting
gastric juices
The lower section of the organ in
which the contents travel from
the stomach down into the small
intestine.
The stomach is composed of five
layers. The innermost layer is
called the mucosa. Next layer is
called the submucosa, surrounded
by the muscularis. The next two
layers, the subserosa and the
serosa are the wrapping for the
stomach. The serosa is the
outermost layer of the stomach.

HOW DOES IT HELP IN THE DIGESTION
AND ABSORPTION OF FOOD ?
Digestion
-Proteins are denatured in the stomach
-Gastric enzyme called pepsin breaks down most of the
protein in the food.
Absorption
-absorbing water, some soluble compounds such as alcohol,
aspirin, and caffeine. The stomach acts as a temporary
reservoir for the food we ingest. The food mixes with the
gastric juice inside the stomach and then moves to the small
intestine where it is digested and nutrients are absorbed.
= ENZYMES IN THE HUMAN STOMACH =
The enzymes that get secreted in the stomach are
called gastric enzymes.
- Pepsin (main gastric enzyme)
Breaks down proteins into peptides
- Gelatinase
Catalyzes the degradation of gelatin (a type of
substance found in protein of animal connective
tissue)
- Amylase
Breaks down starch into maltose molecules.
- Lipase
Breaks down fats into fatty acids
What would happen if our stomach is
damaged or not working ?
Normal stomach (:
Lining – produces acid
which aids in digestion
AND to protect from
harmful bacteria
Gastrin – causes
stomach to produce
acid AND is needed
for the normal growth
of stomach lining
Pepsin – breaks down
proteins
Rennin
Damaged stomach ):
Lining is be affected
Infection
of
stomach
Might not
produce acid
Absence of pepsin
and rennin
Protein cannot be
broken down
Body does not
get enough
nutrients
Cannot pass
through small
intestine
We would NOT
be able to survive
without our
stomach as (NOT
