Do now!
Can you think of a
question (about
physics please) to
write on the question
wall?
Forces
Forces
Forces can change the shape or motion of a
body (object).
Force is measured in Newtons
You know you’ve really
made it when they name a
unit after you.
Isaac Newton 1642 - 1727
Force is a vector

Force is a vector
This means that forces can be represented
by arrows. The length of the arrow indicates
the magnitude, and the direction the
direction!
Adding forces
When adding forces , it is important to
remember they are vectors and their
direction needs to be taken into account.
The result of adding two vectors is called
the resultant.

An investigation
You are now going to investigate how an
applied force affects the extension of a
spring.
And by doing so I hope
you will learn
something about my
law.
Robert Hooke 1635-1703
Hooke’s law
You will add masses to a
spring, measuring the
extension of the spring each
time (the extension is the
distance the spring has
stretched compared to its
original length).
Hooke’s law
Do this until the spring breaks (Use goggles
for this experiment). You will then plot a
graph of your results.
A reminder
Don’t forget your heat questions homework
due in on Monday.
Time for some dead dog action?
Sorry, not today!
Oh! OK then!
Don’t try this at home.
