LEARNING TARGET: STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE
TO SOLVE 2 DIMENSIONAL MOTION
PROBLEMS
A ball is thrown with an initial velocity of 35 m/s at an angle of
39°. what are the X and Y components of the velocity vector.
35 m/s

PROJECTILE MOTION
Vector Review
Vectors have both…
1)
2)
Velocity is a vector because…
Velocity Vectors
In order to analyze a velocity vector you should
look at its ___ & ___ directions.
Newton’s
st
1
law
Newton’s 1st law states…
What does this have to do with projectile motion?
Horizontal Motion
The force of gravity could never alter the horizontal
velocity of an object since perpendicular components of
motion are independent of each other; vertical force does
not effect a horizontal motion.
Vertical Motion
The only force acting on the
falling object is gravity,
therefore the motion in the
vertical direction will follow the
same rules as an object in free
fall.
Projectile Motion
When both components are linked together using a
common factor you get Projectile Motion in 2
dimensions!
Check for Understanding
Which diagram (if any) might represent ...
a.The initial horizontal velocity?
b. The initial vertical velocity?
c. The horizontal acceleration?
d.The vertical acceleration?
e. The net force?
Check for Understanding
Supposing a snowmobile is equipped with a flare
launcher which is capable of launching a flare
vertically (relative to the snowmobile). If the
snowmobile is in motion and launches the flare and
maintains a constant horizontal velocity after the
launch, then where will the flare land (neglect air
resistance)?
Concept Check
Suppose an airplane drops a bomb while it is moving with a
constant horizontal speed at an elevated height. Assuming
that air resistance is negligible, where will the flare land
relative to the plane?
Shot Horizontally
Vertical Displacement Y
Horizontal Displacement X
The Common Factor?
Concept Check
A plane is flying precious fresh fish fillets to a Joe’s
Crab Shack under siege. If the plane flies at a speed of
150m/s at an altitude of 500m, how far away should
the plane drop the fillets.

A stunt skater is going to shock the world. He plans to jump
the worlds largest mammal, a blue whale. The whale is
15m tall, and 45m long. He can get a take off velocity of

Softball Throw Lab
Objectives:
1) Using time, distance, and vector analysis, determine velocity of ball
thrown into air.
2) To find the best angle for throwing a projectile for maximum range.
3) To apply knowledge to softball situations.
Materials: softball, stopwatch, football field.
Method:
You will throw a softball several times at different angles and velocities
in order to get enough data to make a viable conclusion about the
physics of softball throwing.
Procedures:
Design a lab procedure that will answer these questions using multiple
trials and will allow you to have the data to back up your conclusions.
