North Carolina
 North Carolina is the FIRST of the 13 colonies
 It is known as the “Tar Heel State” and “First in
Flight”
 The Capital of North Carolina is Raleigh
Location
North Carolina’s Borders
are: Virginia to the north
Tennessee to the west
South Carolina to the
south
Georgia to the southwest,
and the
Atlantic Ocean to the
east.
Regions
There are 4 regions in NC.
The Tidewater Region (Outer Coastal
Plains) known for water, water, water
EVERYWHERE, borders the Atlantic
Ocean and the Coastal Plains
The Coastal Plains Region (Inner Coastal
Region) known for its fertile grassy FLAT
land, borders the Tidewater and Piedmont
Regions
The Piedmont Region known for the hilly,
rolling land and sandy soil borders the
Coastal Plain and the Mountain Region
The Mountain Region, some of largest
mountains in the eastern United States,
stretch from Piedmont Region to
Tennessee

Economy
North Carolina
has a strong
economy in
farming tobacco
and poultry. It
also produces a
lot of textiles and
furniture.

Climate
• Climate in North
Carolina varies
from the
mountains to
the ocean front.
 The mountains often act as a "shield",
blocking low temperatures and
storms from entering North Carolina.
 Most of the state has a humid
climate except in the higher in the
Appalachians which have a
subtropical highland climate.
 For most areas in the state, the
temperatures in July during the
daytime are around 90 °. In January
the average temperatures range
near 50 °.
 The EXTREME WEATHER NC
experiences is hurricanes and
tornadoes.

• North Carolina is
politically divided
between the eastern
and the western parts of
the state.
• Eastern portion is
democratic western
portion is republican.
• Often called the “purple
state.”
Ethnicity
• North Carolina has
historically been a
rural state, with a
population mostly of
African American,
Native American and
White
• With economic
growth immigration
has fueled Latin
America, India, and
Southeast Asia.
 70% White American,
 21.3% African American,
 1.2% American Indian,
 6.5% are Hispanic or Latino (of any
race).
 The cities of Charlotte and Raleigh
have become major urban centers,
with large and diverse growing
populations.

problem, NC has built
inland ports in Charlotte
and Greensboro.
