KEY ASPECTS OF NAVIGATION
- Functional Road Class-A (FRC-A)
1
Definition
 FRC = Functional Road Class
 Creates a hierarchy for roads and ferries
 Based on importance in the total road network
 Captured for all roads

#2
FRC Classification
 Database representation of classification of roads and ferries
FRC-A
• based on importance that the constituting roads and ferries have in the total network
FRC-B
• based on the role of roads in a local/regional street network

Definition
 Functional Road Class-A is the database representation of a Classification
of roads and ferries based on the importance that the constituting roads
and ferries have in the total road network
w ww.r ms i.c om
#4
Classification
 Functional Road Class-A represents a hierarchic classification of roads
and ferries into 9 classes:
- FRC-A1: Motorway
- FRC-A2: Major roads of high importance
- FRC-A3: Other major roads
- FRC-A4: Secondary roads
- FRC-A5.1: Local connecting roads
- FRC-A5.2: Local roads of high importance
- FRC-A6: Local roads
- FRC-A7: Local roads of minor importance
- FRC-A8: Other roads

which are part of a connection used for international and national traffic
and transport.

FRC-A7 – Local Road of Minor Importance
 All roads which only have a destination function. They are
only used to reach a certain address or destination (e.g. dead
end roads, roads inside living area, alleys: narrow roads
between buildings, in a park or garden)

General Capturing Rules
 FRC-A shall be captured for each captured Road Element taking
into account the rules specified below concerning closed network,
connected network and downwards excluding.
- Closed network
• Infinite sinks
• Infinite sources
- Downwards excluding
- Connected network
w ww.r ms i.c om
Closed Network
Example :
Infinite Sink
Infinite Source
w ww.r ms i.c om
Closed Network
 All captured Road Elements classified with a Functional Road Class-A
higher than Functional Road Class-A Local roads of minor importance
shall represent a closed network together with the captured Road
Elements classified with the higher Functional Road Class(es)-A
 Only captured Road Elements classified with Functional Road Class-A
Motorways shall not form a closed network.
w ww.r ms i.c om
Closed Network
 Functional Road Class-A :
- motorways + major roads of high importance = closed network
- motorways + major roads of high importance + other major roads = closed
network
- motorways + major roads of high importance + other major roads + secondary
roads = closed network
- motorways + major roads of high importance + other major roads + secondary
roads + local connecting roads = closed network
-motorways + major roads of high importance + other major roads + secondary
roads + local connecting roads + local roads of high importance = closed
network
-motorways + major roads of high importance + other major roads + secondary
roads + local connecting roads + local roads of high importance + local roads =
closed network
w ww.r ms i.c om
Downward Excluding
 FRC-A of captured Road Elements representing
roads at roundabouts, connectors, slip roads and parallel roads shall
be captured by means of downwards excluding
 FRC-A has to be based on the fact that if the Road Elements with
the lower classes are excluded, the Road Elements with the higher
classes have to form a closed network and that all connections for
traffic flow are assured.
w ww.r ms i.c om
Downward Excluding
 When a motorway has no continuation at the roundabout, the FRC-A of
the Road Elements representing the roundabout shall not be
the same as the highest FRC-A (namely motorway) but shall be the
same as the highest FRC-A of the other captured Road Elements
joining the Roundabout.
For example as shown in the figure the FRC-A of Road Elements representing a roundabout
is the same as the highest FRC-A of the FRC-A related to the captured Road Elements which join the Roundabout
w ww.r ms i.c om
Connected Network
 All captured Road Elements and Ferry Connections classified with a
FRC-A higher than Other roads shall represent a
connected network together with the captured Road Elements and
Ferry Connections classified with the higher FRC-A.
 Each captured Road Element and Ferry Connection
with a FRC-A higher than Other roads shall be
connected at least at one side by another captured Road Element or
Ferry Connection with the same or a higher FRC-A.
w ww.r ms i.c om
FRC-A7 & 8 Capturing
 FRC-A7 will be assigned to any new geo:
-Private communities (1 way in or out)
-Mobile home parks
-Cemeteries
-Special restrictions
-Destination
-Apartment roads
-Rest area
 FRC 8 for
-Closed roads
-Paths or stairs
 FRC 8 is always FOW 3 or FOW 13
Bus or taxi lane = same as road
w ww.r ms i.c om
Connectors
 FRC-A of Road Elements representing a connector depends on its
function and on the FRC-A of the Road Elements making use of the
connector to ensure complete connectivity.
 In case the connector has the function of only connecting the
carriageways of a multi carriageway, the FRC-A related to the connector
is the same as the FRC-A related to the multi carriageway
 In the rare occasions that the FRC-A related to the carriageways of a
multi carriageway differ, the Road Element(s) representing the connector
shall have the same FRC-A as the Road Elements representing the
carriageway with the lowest FRC-A

FRC-A 7
w ww.r ms i.c om
Connectors
 If a connector ensures connectivity with Road Elements with FRC
Other roads and the connector can be used to make U-turns on the
multi carriageway, the FRC-A related to the connector is the same
as the FRC-A related to the multi carriageway.
