Learning to Read the Challenge
(Roadmap page 42)
• Read and understand the entire challenge before beginning to solve
the challenge
• Look at the pie chart that breaks down scored elements and notice
where the points are
• Scored elements have special requirements
• Quick tips:
– Highlight all sentences that include “must” in yellow
– Highlight all sentences that include “will” in pink (except sentences
that have the phrase “will earn points”.
– Circle words “will not”, “cannot”, “no”, “not”, “can’t”, “won’t”
– Highlight all sentences that include “point” in blue
– Highlight all sentences that include “may” in green
– Yellow and pink are rules the team must follow
– Blue and green are areas the team gets to decide how and what they
will do
Intent of Challenge
• Build two or more free-standing Structures
made only with balsa wood and glue capable
of supporting weight
• The team will create and present a story about
an international issue and how different
nations work together to solve it.
• 8 minute time limit
• $125 budget
• A minimum 16’x16’ performance area
Structures
• Made only with:
– 100% balsa wood
– Glue-any commercially available adhesive material
• Must be free standing
• Total weight of combined structures:
– Elementary level 15-100 grams
– Middle level 12-50 grams
– Secondary level 10-25 grams
Structures
•

•
Height 7.5 in.- 9 in.
Must not be painted
Team made laminations only permitted
Will be tested for strength with weight
placement
• Must be dry and remain dry at tournament
• May not be altered in any way after structure
check in
Structure Tester
Structure Tester Taping Instructions
• There is a 2in (5.1cm) diameter circle that will be
marked around Safety Pole. The team must place
all Structures outside this area.

Structure Base Region Marking:
The base of the Structure Tester will be marked with masking tape (or other suitable tape), to
indicate the Regions for placement of the two or more Structures.
Using a pencil or other temporary marking method, draw center lines from the outer edge of the
tester base towards the center of the Safety Pole, as indicated in Figure D. This divides the Tester
Base into the four major Regions: 1, 2, 3 and 4.
From the edge of the Tester Base, measure inward along each of the four lines, and mark a point
5in (12.7cm) from the edge. Draw a diagonal line connecting each of these points, as shown in
Figure E.
To tape the lines, use 1⁄2in (1.27cm) wide tape in a color that shows up well on the Tester Base.
Place a 6in (15.2cm) strip along each diagonal line, so that the edge of the tape nearest the Safety
Pole is just touching the pencil line. Check tape placement by making sure the inside edges of the
tape form a 5.66in (14.4cm) square with a hole in the center.
Next, place a strip of the 1⁄2in (1.27cm) wide tape over each of the four center lines, from the
outer edge of the Tester base to the Safety Pole. Place the tape so its center is on the pencil line.
This defines the four Regions. A Region is the combined number and letter spaces: 1A, 2B, 3C and
4D. The Bonus Areas are the sub-Region triangles: A, B, C and D.
The team should be aware that some Tester Bases may have a center hole that is greater than the
diameter of the Safety Pole, possibly up to 2in (5.1cm) in diameter. The team should consider this
possibility if planning to place Structures in the Bonus Areas.
Note: If the team members wish to know the specifics of the Structure Tester for the tournament
(including the height of the Tester Base, the thickness of the Pressure Board, and the actual weight
of the Pressure Board), they may check with their Tournament Director.

Regions on the Structure Tester
Regions are numbered
Bonus Areas are lettered
Structure Tester Base
Structure Testing Procedure
• The team will elect Standard or Bonus Placement in the Prep Area.
TEAMS CANNOT ATTEMPT BOTH.
• Teams may hold structures in place while placing the pressure
board. Structures may not be touched after this unless any weights
placed and the pressure board are removed first.
• During the 8 minute presentation time, for Standard Placement, the
team will place each structure in a Region of their choice.
• Structures can be placed in the same or different Regions
• Each Structure must be free-standing and MUST NOT:
–
–
–
–
–
–
–
Contact another Structure
Contact the Safety Pole
Contact any of the Safety Shields
Contact any of the Safety Supports
Contact the taped lines between regions
Cross a taped line
Be placed inside the 2”diameter circle surrounding the Safety Pole
Structure Testing Procedure
• Once the structures are positioned to the team’s
satisfaction, the team will place the Pressure Board on
the Structures.
• The Weight Placement Appraiser will then verify each
Structure is contacting the Structure Testing Base in
only one region.
• Note-for standard placement, a structure may cross the
line into the lettered area within the region it is placed.
• If structure position is approved, weight placement can
continue.
• If team doesn’t receive approval, the Pressure Board
will need to be removed, the structures repositioned
and the process begun again.
• If compliance is not achieved, the Official Weight Held
will be zero.
Structure Testing ProcedureBonus Placement
• Bonus Placement must be elected in the Prep
Area
• All Structures must be placed inside the Bonus
Areas A, B, C, D only
• Each Structure must be placed in one Bonus Area
only
• Structures can be in the same or different Bonus
Areas
• Structures must not
– contact each other or the Safety Pole
– contact or cross ANY taped lines.
• Structure testing begins as described above.
Structure Testing Procedure
• A weight must be held for 4 seconds to count for
score.
• Weights will be placed one at a time until:
– The team chooses to stop weight placement
– The structure fails--pressure board or structure
touches any safety support or safety shields
– Weight stack reaches the mark 1”from the top of the
pole
• A one foot extension will be available at State Tournament
– The 8 minute time limit ends.
The Story
• The team will present an original and team
created story in which characters from 2 Nations
work together to address an International Issue.
• A Nation is a real country clearly identified on a
current or past geopolitical map.
• The International Issue is any matter of great
concern, real or imaginary, affecting 2 or more
nations.
• The story must be set in either one or both of the
featured Nations and include one character, real
or imaginary, from each of those Nations.
The Story
• The story can be set in any time period.
• During the story, 1 historical Art or Science
creation developed in each of the featured
nations must be depicted which helps address
the International Issue.
• The structure testing should be integrated into
the story.
Team Choice Elements
• Two creations that show off the interests,
skills , areas of strength, and talents of a team
• Evaluated for:
• Creativity and originality
• Quality, workmanship or effort
• Integration into the presentation.
Make sure to accurately indicate on the Tournament Data
Forms exactly what should be scored
Things to Bring to Performance
• Team Identification Sign
• Any required Original Packaging from structure
materials
• Container for Structure storage
• Safety Goggles for weight placement
• Tournament Data Forms found at the end of the
Challenge
– These are used to help appraisers identify exactly what the
team wants appraised--have the team be very accurate
and precise when filling them out.
– Bring the number of copies indicated as multiple
appraisers use them.
Special Considerations
• Have your structure checked-in prior to
presentation time. You may or may not be
assigned a time for structure check-in at your
tournament. For full check-in procedure, refer to
page 13 of your Challenge instructions.
• Remember to bring a team supplied storage
container that will house your structure in the
Check-In area prior to your presentation. The
sealed container will then be picked up by a team
member 20 minutes prior to your presentation
and taken to the prep area with seal in place.
Special Considerations
• During weight placement, safety shields may
be removed to position the structures and
place the pressure board, but must then be
replaced to add weights.
• If a team member’s head is below the level of
the Pressure Board, team supplied safety
goggles must be worn (ordinary glasses do not
count).
• Closed-toe shoes must be worn by anyone
placing weights
Special Considerations
• Elementary and Middle School teams may have
an Adult Assistant to help place weight 25 lbs or
more.
• Assistants may only help a student lift, move and
set a weight on instruction from a team member.
• They must wait in designated area until called by
the student.
• They may not direct weight placement or removal
in any way.
Scoring of the Structures Weight Held
Ratio
• The structures with the highest WHR (Weight
Held Ratio) will receive 140 points and every
other structure receives a percentage based
on the ratio between the two teams’ WHR.
– Weight Held Ratio=Official Weight Held in
pounds/the total combined weight of Structures
in grams
– The official weight held will be multiplied by 1.3
for teams that choose, designate and are
successful with Bonus Placement
Scoring of the Story/Team Choice
Elements
• The creative portrayal of the International Issue
• The creative portrayal of of how the characters work
together to address the Issue
• The creative portrayal of the the Art or Science
Creation from Nation 1
• The creative portrayal of the Art or Science Creation
from Nation 2
• The creative integration of Structure Testing into the
Story
• Team Choice Elements evaluated for creativity and
originality, quality or workmanship/effort and
integration
Scoring Summary
• 58% points (140)—Weight Held Ratio
• 41% points (60)—Story
• 25% points (60)—Team Choice Elements
