• West Bohemia covers the area of regions which
are located in the western part of the Czech
Republic – Pilsen region and Karlovy Vary region
• Karlovy Vary and Pilsen are the main centres
• The region is ideally positioned between the
capital of Prague and western European
countries, it borders Germany (Bavaria, Saxony)
• Machinery, building and food industry in Pilsen
region
• Mining (brown coal), machinery, spa industry in
Karlovy Vary region

• The Šumava Mts, Český les Mts and Ore Mts
(Krušné hory) form natural borders with
Germany
• Hilly landscape (Brdy, Slavkovský les), basins

with people – fishing, canoeing, camping

and Čertovo
• Peat vegetation (= rašeliniště) e.g. Tříjezerní slať
• Popular resorts are Železná Ruda, Špičák Kvilda,
Srní, Modrava – hiking, biking, skiing (downhill,
cross-country)

• The mountain range stretches along the border
with Germany from Kraslice to Děčín
• The highest peak is Klínovec (1244m)
• Ore = rock from which metal can be obtained
• Rich in metal ores and curative springs, which
gave rise to numerous spa resorts
• Popular resorts are Boží Dar, Jáchymov, Abertamy,
Pernink, Bublava – downhill and cross-country
skiing, hiking, biking
• Soos – national nature reserve. It is a complex of
vast peat bogs (= bahenní rašeliniště) with
numerous mineral springs and pure carbon
dioxide in mofettes (= mud volcanoes)

• Spa = a place where the water has special
minerals in it, and where people go to improve
their health by drinking the water or swimming in
it

radon spa in the CR and its waters have the

• Pilsen was established by King Wenceslas II in
1295 at the confluence of four rivers – the

Republic (167,000 inhabitants).

seat of the University of West Bohemia and
the Bishop’s Residence.

• Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF) is
held every year in July, horse-races and golf
championships
• Becherovka liqueur, Moser glass, production of
porcelain, spa wafers (= round biscuits made of
mineral water)
