Chapter 20: Arabian Peninsula
Section 1: Iraq, Iran, and
Afghanistan’s physical geography
The mountains that surround the
country of Iran are the Zagros,
Elburz, and the Kopet-Dag
mountains.
The Arabian Peninsula is a large,
rectangular area. The Red Sea,
Gulf of Aden, and Persian Gulf
surround it.
North of the Arabian Peninsula is
the plain of the Tigris and
Euphrates rivers.
The highest point on the Arabian
Peninsula is in the mountains of
Yemen.
Exotic
Rivers
Rivers that begin in humid regions
and then flow through dry ones
Rub’ al-Khali
Means “empty
quarter.” It is the
largest sand desert in
the world and is
located at the southern
tip of the
Arabian Peninsula.
Wadis
Dry streambeds in the desert that nomads
sometimes dig into to get water.
Fossil water
Water found deep underground that is not
being replaced by rainfall.
