Canadian Cultural Geography
• Factors affecting the location of settlement:
– The physical environment and its
economic possibilities are the main
determinants
• Landforms and climate: flat land, mild
winter, enough precipitation, and good
soil are important factors
• Proximity to water for trade and drinking
• Often, towns are centered around resources
– These towns go through Boom and Bust as
the resource is developed and then used up
or not needed
– Campbell River is an example of Boom and
Bust
• Where people live within a given area is
called population distribution
• The average number of people living in an
area is population density
Economic Geography
• The Canadian economy has evolved from
resource based and manufacturing based to
be more diverse
• Primary economic sector: resource industries
such as logging, fishing, farming and mining
• Secondary economic sector: manufacturing
industries such as steel, milling lumber and
automobile making
• Tertiary economic sector: service industries
such as teaching and working at McDonald’s
• Economic Regions:
– Atlantic Region (N.B., N.S., P.E.I., NFLD)
– Great Lakes – St. Lawrence Region
(southern Ontario and Quebec)
– The Shield Region (Northern Ont., Que,
Man., Sask)
– The North Region (Yukon, NWT, Nunavut)
– The Prairie Region (Alberta, S. Sask., Man.,
– B.C.
