Africa’s Geography
1. Africa is separated from Europe by the
Mediterranean Sea.
2. Joined to Asia by the Isthmus of Suez.
3. Africa's largest country is Sudan, and
its smallest on the continental
mainland is The Gambia.
Africa’s Geography
1. The climate of Africa ranges from tropical
to sub arctic on its highest peaks.
2. Northern half is primarily desert or dry
3. Central and southern areas contain both
savanna plains and very dense jungle
(rainforest) regions.
Africa’s Culture
1. Egypt has long been a cultural focus of the Arab
world.
2. Atlantic slave trade was a start of the modern
samba, blues, jazz, reggae, rap, and rock and roll.
3. African hip hop is a particular form of music from
Senegal blended with traditional Mbalax, and
Kwaito.
4. A variety of musical instruments are used, including
drums, bells, musical bow, lute, flute, and trumpet.
Africa’s Culture
1. Musical and dance traditions of Africa are
maintained by oral traditions.
2. Arab influences are visible in North African music
and dance.
3. Western influences are apparent, due to colonization,
in Southern Africa.
4. African dances are very important for
communication and dancers use a number of visual
devices.

Zimbabwe is a landlocked country, surrounded by
South Africa to the south, Botswana to the west,
Zambia to the northwest and Mozambique to the
east and northeast.
Mount Nyangani is the highest mountain in
Zimbabwe
The north-western border is defined by the Zambezi
River.
To the south, Zimbabwe is separated from South
Africa by the Limpopo River.
Human Rights in Zimbabwe
1. There have been a various civil and political
human rights abuses throughout Zimbabwe
2. Amnesty International and Human Rights
Watch the government of Zimbabwe violates
the rights to shelter, food, freedom of
movement and residence, freedom of
assembly and the protection of the law.
Africa’s Language
◊ Africa contains millions of languages.
◊ There are 4 main language families that are
divided in Africa. Afro-Asiatic, Nilo-Saharan,
Niger-Congo, and Khoisan.
◊ Each of the language family speaks all
different kind of languages.
◊ There are sooo many different languages in
Africa that we have trouble counting them!
Africa Religion
◊ In Africa, they don’t all have the same religion.
◊ People believed in wide variety of beliefs and
their religion so it’s hard to say what one main
belief they believed in.
◊ There are around 150 million African Muslims.
◊ And…there are 130 million African Christian.
◊ There are only a few whose religion is Hindu
or Baha’I.
◊ The African people believed in ancestors, and
spirits.
Timbuktu/Mali
◊ Timbuktu is an ancient city in Mali.
◊ “Tin” means “place” and “buktu” a name of an
old Malian woman known for her honest.
◊ Populated with Songhay and other places and
it’s about 15km north of the Niger River.
◊ Was first built up by the nomadic Tuareg.

Songhay
◊ After the decline of Mali, the Geo
Kingdom re-powered itself as the major
kingdom in Sahel. Songhay kingdom in
the region of Gao had been existing
since the 11th century, but came in
under control of Mali in 13th century.

“scramble for Africa”
◊ Late19th century, European powers had
taken over most of Africa’s continent.
◊ They had create made states, leaving
two, independent nations.
◊ France, Portugal and Britain had
expropriated vast areas of Africa
