LOCATION AND BORDERS
Location



The UK is situated in the north-west part of Europe. It consists
of two large islands (Great Britain and Ireland).
It borders with France over the English Channel, which separates
Great Britain from continental Europe, on the east it’s washed by
the North Sea and on the west it’s washed by the Atlantic Ocean.
Its only neighbour is The Irish Republic.

It is a country consisting of four countries: England,
Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
CLIMATE
The UK's climate varies greatly according to season
and location, but on the whole can be described as
mild with few extremes.

GEOGRAPHY
Area:
 The UK has a total area of almost a quarter of a million square
kilometres (250 000 km²).
 The UK is bordered by four seas:
 to the south by the English Channel, which separates it from
continental Europe, but the UK is connected to continental Europe
by the Channel Tunnel, which at 50 kilometres is the longest
underwater tunnel in the world,
 to the east by the North Sea,
 to the west by the Irish Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.

NATURAL FEATURES
 Natural Regions: Scottish Highlands, Lowlands and Uplands; Lake
District.
 Major Ranges: The main mountain regions here are the Cornish
Heights (south-west England), the Cambrians (Wales), the
Cambrian Mountains (in the Lake District), the Pennines (the
Backbone of England).
 The Cheviot Hills are on the border between England and Scotland.
The Highlands of Scotland are the highest mountains in Britain
(with the highest mountain Ben Nevis – 1342 km).

Notable Peaks: Ben Nevis (in Scotland) 4 406 feet (1 343 meters);
Snowdon (in Wales), 3 560 feet (1 085 meters).

(Northern Ireland), Lough Erne (Northern Ireland), Loch

(south Scotland).
