Belize,
previously known
as British
Honduras, is
located in Central
America. Belize is
bordered on the
North by Mexico,
South and West
by Guatemala,
and the
Caribbean
Sea seals its 174
mile coastline to
the East.
The area of the
Belize mainland
and cayes is
8,867 square
miles. The
country's greatest
length from north
to south is 174
miles and its
greatest width is
68 miles.
Dangriga is the unofficial capital
city of the Garifuna. They settled
this location in Belize on
November 19, 1832 which is now
Garifuna Settlement Day. The
town is located in the northern
regions of the Stann Creek district
on the main cut south called the
Southern highway. It is also the
largest township in Stann Creek
and perhaps in southern Belize
with a population just over 11,000
people. The town is named by
the Garifuna and roughly
translates to "Standing Waters"
