ACADEMIC VOCABULARY
8TH GRADE
SOCIAL STUDIES
BY T. HARRIS
Altitude
 Above sea level 8,000ft or 2,400m
 Regions on the Earth's surface (or in its
atmosphere) that are high above mean sea level are
referred to as high altitude. High altitude is
sometimes defined to begin at 2,400 metres
(8,000 ft) above sea level.[4][5][6]
 Because of the lower pressure, the air expands as it
rises, which causes it to cool.[8][9] Thus, high
altitude air is cold, which causes a characteristic
alpine climate. This climate dramatically affects the
ecology at high altitude.
Boundary
 Boundaries—particularly field
boundaries—are among the oldest
features in an English rural landscape.[1]
Although a boundary itself is an abstract
concept, the boundary can often be
seen by differences in land use on either
side.
Confluence
 Known also as a conflux,[1] it refers either to the point where
a tributary joins a larger river, called the main stem, or
where two streams meet to become the source of a river of a
new name, such as the confluence of the Monongahela and
Allegheny Rivers in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania creating the
Ohio River.
Confluence
 Confluence of rivers, the Mosel flows into the Rhine at
Koblenz. The Name "Koblenz" itself has its origin in the
Latin name "Confluentes“
Estuary
An estuary is a partly enclosed coastal body of water
with one or more rivers or streams flowing into it,
and with a free connection to the open sea.

Fjord
 a long, narrow inlet with steep sides or
cliffs, created in a valley carved by
glacial activity.
Inlet
 In sea coasts, an inlet usually refers to the actual connection
between a bay and the ocean and is often called an "entrance"
or a recession in the shore of a sea, lake, or river.
Knob
 A prominent rounded hill or mountain, particularly in the
Appalachians and the Ozarks
McAfee Knob is a feature of Catawba mountain
located in Catawba, Roanoke County, Virginia on the
Appalachian Trail.
Lagoon
 a shallow body of water separated from a larger body of
water by barrier islands or reefs.
Peninsula
 a piece of land that is bordered
by water on three sides
but connected to mainland.

the Currituck Sound.
Sound
 In geography a sound or seaway is a large sea or ocean inlet
larger than a bay, deeper than a bight, and wider than a fjord;
or it may be defined as a narrow sea or ocean channel
between two bodies of land (see also strait).

Tributary
A tributary[1] or
affluent[2] is a
stream or river
that flows into a
main stem (or
parent) river or a
lake.
