 Objective: Define European imperialism in Africa
and understand the impact the Berlin
Conference had on African society
 Bell Work: What are some reasons why
European countries wanted to colonize different
regions of the World?
List as many as Possible
Berlin Conference Simulation
You have been placed in a group which
will represent one of the imperial powers
of the 19th century
Looking at your blurb & your bell work, prioritize
with your group what your country MOST wants
from the land they are looking to gain
Rules of the Conference – 3 Rounds
 One group member will come up when called and place a circle on
an area of Africa that your country is claiming
 The group member must state: (Country) claims this land
 Any country that does not claim there land can have it taken away if
another group calls them out
 Once Circle has been placed on the Board, decision is Final
 Once a land is claimed, all remaining circles CAN NOT overlap
claimed land
 UNLESS the circle is a country that already owns that land
 After each simulation, we will have a reflection / discussion period to
discuss the positives / negatives of each decision made
 At the end of the simulation, we will look at all three rounds, and
vote on a winning country
 Country will be given 3 Aney Bucks per Person
