Study area
South Bohemian region - one of the oldest rural region with a long tradition
of agricultural development
The region covers an area of
10 057 km2 (12,8 % of the CR).
The
region has the lowest
density of population in CR (62

General problems
 Transboundary relationships and the former iron curtain.
 Bad infrastructure especially in the marginal parts of the
Region
 Low knowledge of foreign language and IT skills.

you try to accomplish through higher
education?
 Serving traditional community needs: teachers, nurses,
engineers, etc.
 Knowledge developed economy
 More competitive region
 General regional business growth
 More jobs
Why is higher education the most appropriate
means to reach these objectives?
 There is a contract with the South Bohemian
Region 2009, on the level of the University, but
in fact this vision will be fulfilled by the faculties
or departments.
 There are currently studying 12 000 students at
the University of South Bohemia.

 It is possible to find the link between higher education, success in grant
competitions and subsequent employment, especially in infrastructure
projects
 Lifelong learning in the civil service, obligatory upgrading of the qualification
of employees
 Life long learning
 University of the 3rd age
 Grant agency for supporting young researchers -Phd students
 It is responding with the spirit of the project UNICREDS – The share of the
combined studies at the USB can show us the number of employed students

There was established Centrum inovací a aplikovaného výzkumu (Centre
for innovations and applied research) which prepares not only development
project, but also development of cooperation of selected students of Faculty of
Economics and businessmen in the project
Agentura profesního rozvoje (Agency for career development). In the
framework of these activities started cooperation with important regional
enterprises
such as BOSCH, Schneider Electric, Schwan cosmetics, Eon, Lactoprod
Zelandia, Legro Consult. The cooperation in 2007 was targeted especially on
support of residencies of selected students in mentioned enterprises (12
students participated on those residencies).
Future
2011 – 2013 will be built research centre of aquaculture and biocenoses

What are the most important challenges and
obstacles you have to overcome/take into
account to accomplish the desired economic
and community benefits through higher
education?
The university was founded 1991 as the initiative of the local Institutes of
the Academy of Sciences, it was not the social order, the needs of the
region, there was no pressure from the business.
Communication barriers inside and outside the university
Companies have little interest in cooperating with the university
Too small work market for educated people in relation to university size
The region cannot take advantage of the universities
