currents cannot
move freely around
the world. So when
surface currents
meet continents,
they deflect, or
change direction.

• Deep cold currents
move water toward
the equator.
• Cold water rises to
replace warm water
leaving.
• Warm water travels
near the surface
toward polar regions.
