Westward
Movement
Summarize the major expeditions and explorations that played
a role in westward expansion including those of Daniel Boone,
Lewis and Clark, and Zebulon Pike-and compare the
geographic features of areas explored.
Explorations and
expeditions out west
opened lands to
further settlement.
For example, the explorations of
Daniel Boone, Lewis and Clark,
and Zebulon Pike...
What geographical features
did the explorers
encounter?
•Plains
•Prairies
•Rivers
•Deserts
•Mountain Ranges
Daniel Boone
•Crossed the Appalachian Mountains, through the Cumberland
Gap to Kentucky
•creating the Wilderness Trail
•such pioneer trails expanded on the original Native
American trails
•Established the first U.S. settlement west of the Appalachian
Mountains
•Eventually purchased much of the land of Kentucky that was
taken away from the Cherokee
Lewis and Clark
•With the help of Native American guides,
documented the land was included in the Louisiana
Purchase
•His expedition was commissioned by Thomas
Jefferson to explore and map the area across the
continent to the Pacific Ocean
•Why did Jefferson want this?
•Americans were still looking for a continuous
water route connecting east to west
Lewis and Clark
•During their travels, they also passed through the
Oregon Territory.
•This established the basis for American claim to
this land.
•Their expedition brought back information about the
Native Americans who lived in these regions.
•Provided scientific information and specimens of
the plants and animals they found.
What was the Louisiana
Territory?
Zebulon Pike
•Located and explored the upper regions of the
Mississippi River
•Made treaties with the Native Americans
•Mapped and claimed lands for the United States
during the westward expansion
•into uncharted territories that stretched to the
Pacific Ocean and up to the Oregon Country
Zebulon Pike
“Pike’s Peak”
•in present-day Colorado
•was named in his honor because of his further
explorations of the southwest in Spanish territory
How did these explorations and
expeditions of these men impact the
institution of slavery?
The explorations and expeditions of
these men did not bring slavery to
the new western land. But, because
it opened up the land for further
settlement, it would eventually raise
the issue of expanding slavery into
the western territories.
