UNU Food and Nutrition Programme for
Human and
Social Development
The United Nations University Food and Nutrition
Programme (UNU-FNP) is comprised of a global
network of institutions and a global community of
scholars responsible for carrying out the mission of
the UNU-FNP. The UNU-FNP’s mission is expressed
through three specific goals:

Core mission by focusing on three specific goals:
(1) to assist developing regions enhance individual, organizational and
institutional capacity in the area of food and nutrition,
(2) to undertake research activities that have a global impact or require
global efforts in the areas of food, nutrition, agriculture and policy/program
development, implementation and evaluation, and
(3) to serve as the academic arm for the United Nations System in areas
of food and nutrition that are best addressed in a non-regulatory,

non-normative environment.

- All activities are conducted in partnership with other UN
agencies
- All funds are spent on development activities or enable
development activities. Virtually all core funds are spent in
developing countries.

Refocus
• Shift the focus of new capacity development initiatives
& limited financial resources exclusively to building
capacity in academic “institutions”.
• “Institutionalize” the UNU-FNP academic network and
conduct research and training activities within the
context of the network; create “win-win” partnerships
that enable resources to flow north to south and south
to south.
