Why Restrict Access?
According to Dr Mary Aiken – Cyber Psychologist – Letting
a child unsupervised on the internet is the equivalent to, if
not worse than, letting them roam free in a big city at night.
Children are entitled to their privacy however restrictions of
their online activity should be in place from a young age and
removed piece by piece as they grow and develop into their
teens.
The Internet is an amazing and sociable tool… when things
are going well. However, when things go wrong, children
don’t have the maturity and social skills to deal with it e.g.
school hall senario
IP Address
Everything on the internet has an IP address
IP stands for Internet Protocol
IP addresses are an identifier for where internet traffic is
coming from
Every device on the same network has the same IP address
Router
A router is a device on your home network that ‘routes’
information from your devices on your network to and from
the internet
Your router is the gateway to the Internet
You can easily use your router to restrict access to the
Internet
MAC address
Every internet capable device has a unique MAC address
The MAC address of a device comes in a hexadecimal
format and looks something like 9A:00:2D:DD:F3:C3
It can be sometimes referred to as a WIFI Address
You can use a MAC address to identify and restrict devices
on your network
