What is IMS?
• The IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem)
enables the support for IP multimedia
applications within the UMTS system.
• It’s a concept developed and specified by
the 3rd Generation Partnership Project.
• It is intended as an open systems
architecture.
IMS has three layers to it.
Basic Principles
• Independent Access
• Different Network Architecture
• Terminal and user mobility
• Extensive IP-based services
IMS
• A user could, for example, pay for and
download a video clip to a chosen mobile
or fixed device and subsequently use
some of this material to create a
multimedia message for delivery to friends
on many different networks.
IMS will have a major impact on
the telecommunication industry.
