What’s the Catch?
Knowing
and Following the
Technology Policies!
Acceptable Use Policy
The use of the Internet is a privilege, not a right.
Inappropriate use of the Internet may result in
limitation or cancellation of user privileges and
appropriate disciplinary action.
 The Internet/School Network is provided for
school-related purposes only. No right of privacy
exists in any communication on the Internet or
the School Network. Email is archived by law.
 Users will not create or transmit chain letters via
e-mail.

Acceptable Use Policy
School system equipment, software, or email may
not be used for personal gain or profit, to
advertise any product, or to promote a political
position.
 Users may not create, solicit, or transmit
defamatory, fraudulent, pornographic, harassing,
obscene, or vulgar images or documents.
(Be careful what you send or forward in email!)

Acceptable Use Policy
Accessing programs and websites not appropriate
for educational use is prohibited. Students will
not participate in Internet instant message
activities, visit chat rooms, access personal e-mail
accounts (unless it is a curriculum-related
requirement), or participate in any activity that
may cause harm to themselves or others. This
includes revealing personal information.
 Users may not change settings on school
equipment.

Acceptable Use Policy
Users may not attempt to harm or destroy
hardware, software, or data, or knowingly create,
upload, or transmit computer viruses.
 Users will not attempt to gain unauthorized
access to programs, websites, network file space,
or computer equipment. Attempting to disable or
circumvent system filtering software is
prohibited. Promoting, advocating, or
participating in hacking is strictly prohibited.

Acceptable Use Policy
Passwords are not to be shared with anyone or
posted in a conspicuous location. Users will not
attempt to log in to any system or software using
credentials other than their own.
Never give any of your passwords to a student.
 Users will not use personal laptops, computers,
or network equipment to gain access to Wilkes
County Schools’ wireless network or connect to
the school network in any fashion.


Acceptable Use Policy
Users may not use personal laptops or computers
on school premises. Wilkes County Schools
cannot ensure personal computers are free from
viruses and malware. In order to protect
computers, systems, and networks belonging to
Wilkes County Schools from harm, no personal
computer use of any kind will be allowed for
students and/or staff. Wilkes County Schools
cannot ensure compliance with the federal Child
Internet Protection Act (CIPA) for personal
computers; therefore, personal computer use will
not be allowed for students, faculty, or staff.
Acceptable Use Policy
Teachers / Assistants will supervise students’ use
of computers and other technologies at all times.
 All employees are responsible for supervising
their children as well as children under their care
while using computers and other technologies
before and after regular school hours and on
teacher workdays.
 School web pages must be approved by the
principal before they are posted.

Acceptable Use Policy
All staff will model and promote ethical use of
technology.
 All laws and Board of Education policies apply
for all employees and students, including those
relating to copyright/trademarks, confidential
information, and public records. Information
electronically transmitted or stored is subject to
the same copyright laws as non-electronic data.
The intellectual property of others will be granted
the respect afforded copyrighted materials.

Acceptable Use Policy

All employees must sign the Acceptable Use
Policy each year. All students enrolling in a new
school must sign the Acceptable Use Policy.
School personnel should ensure all new students
have received and signed these policies.
Hardware Policy
The Technology Department must approve the
purchase of all new technology equipment in
accordance with Wilkes County Schools’
Technology Plan.
 Opening and setting up new equipment is the sole
responsibility of the Technology Department.
 Persons not employed or approved by Wilkes
County Schools’ Technology Department may
not repair, move, or tamper with school
equipment or software.


Employees are responsible for securing
equipment assigned to them against theft,
vandalism, or abuse.
 Employees should follow site-based procedures

owned systems except by authorized personnel
within the Technology Department.


School E-mail

E-mail is not private. Keep your computer
activities professional and education-related.
You’re responsible for what you send and
forward!

Email may be checked at home by using the
following Internet address –
www.google.com/a/wilkes.k12.nc.us
School E-mail

Your space on the email server is limited. Once
filled up, your inbox will close. Messages sent or
received while your mailbox is closed will not be
able to be accessed even after your mailbox is
reopened. Avoid this by keeping your inbox, sent
items, and trash cleaned out.
Your New Laptop
Always log in with your
username, password, and
WILKESNET – both at home
and at school.
 Avoid extreme temperatures.
Never leave your laptop in the
car!
 If your laptop is too cold or
warm, allow it to reach room
temperature before turning on.

Your New Laptop
Never eat or drink around your
laptop.
 Use on a solid surface – carpet
or fabric surfaces could result
in overheating.
 Never leave your laptop
unattended.
 Shut down and power off
completely before closing the
laptop.

Your New Laptop
Feel free to take your laptop
home, but remember to bring it
back each school day!
 Proxy Filter cannot be
disabled.
 Your documents and email are
housed on our school server.
Currently, you can’t access
this from home. Save to a
flash drive to work on
documents from home.

Your New Laptop
Keep it clean! Dust can be
harmful to equipment. Be sure
to use products intended to be
used for the cleaning of
equipment. Never use Clorox
wipes or glass cleaner.
 Do not stack items on top of
your laptop.
 Insert cords, cables, and
storage devices carefully.

Your New Laptop
Allow your battery to
completely drain once a
month.
 Be sure you read and sign off
on the employee laptop user
agreement:


Microphone / Headphone Jacks
Wireless Switch
Often, this switch is the source of problems you may
experience with network connectivity. Be careful not
to turn it off. If you do, just switch it back on and
your connection should be restored. 

Power Supply
Power Supply
To charge your laptop, plug the power supply
into the back of your machine and then into a
wall outlet
 Battery-power is limited and could result in a
loss of data or work. Be careful by saving often!
 When storing your charger, neatly wrap the cords
around the charger and loosely secure with the
elastic strap. Don’t pull too tightly or it could
dislodge from the unit.

Power Supply
Let me know immediately if your power supply
ceases to charge your laptop battery, or if your
battery no longer holds a charge as long as it
used to.
 Power supplies are not interchangeable.


You should also know…
Once you’ve logged in, there will be nothing on
your desktop. Programs should be accessed
through the Start Menu and the Teachers Menu.
 The Group Shared Drive is located at
Start>Teachers Menu>Internal Drives.
 Your USB Drives can also be accessed through
Internal Drives.
 To see all your drives, open your documents or
Windows Explorer.

You should also know…
Your ITF keeps an updated technology
workspace for your convenience. It includes a
great deal of information pertinent to you, the
technology you use in your classroom, and the
integration of technology with your students. It
may be accessed through the following URL:
http://billiejscott.weebly.com/
 If you’d like to see an addition to this workspace,
please let your ITF know!

You should also know…
All requests for technology services (including
questions you need to ask your ITF) should be
submitted through this workspace using the form
on the Request for Services page.
 When requesting work on your computer, you’ll
need to communicate the name of your computer.
To access this see the login screen and click the
drop down arrow beside of password.
 The name will be 12 characters long and will
look something like m315IL0_____.

You should also know…
Equipment should NEVER be moved to a
different location in the school. It is assigned to
a room, not a user.
 Printers are named by room number.
 You can change your own screen resolution.
1024 X 768 is best.
 Live Search will yield no returns in Internet
Explorer. Make sure your browser says Google
in the upper-right corner.
 Log off when you are finished with your
computer.

Troubleshooting
Always reboot first.
 Try to Refresh Connections through the
Maintenance option in the Teacher’s Menu.
 Make sure your Wifi light is on. If it isn’t, try
sliding the wireless switch first.
 Desktop computers and printers don’t run
wirelessly. They must be plugged into a working
network drop to connect. Check to see that there
are lights on the back of the computer where the
network cable is plugged in. If not, try a
different wall port.

Speakers
SmartBoard
Interactive Smart Classrooms
Make sure your students use the SMART Board daily!
Putting it All Together!

Set up your computer. Plug in the power supply and network
connection (optional).

SMART Board Projector power supply should be plugged in. This
doesn’t have to be unplugged daily.

Plug the cable hanging from the lower right corner of the SMART
Board into a USB port on your laptop (this allows your computer
to “talk” to your Board).

Attach the VGA cable from the SMART Board Power Hub to the
blue connection on the back of the laptop (this attaches your
projector to your computer).

Attach the cable hanging from the speakers to a USB port on your
laptop.

Make sure the power supply for your speakers is plugged in.

Boot up your computer. Use the remote to turn on your SMART
Board.
Also…
Remember to turn off the projector when the
SMART Board is not in use. Conserve the life of
your bulb by observing the 30 minute rule!
 FN + F8 is your VERY best friend! Don’t forget
it! This will force the feed of your computer
image to your projector should it not show up
automatically.
