CURRENT AND FUTURE WI-FI
SYSTEM LEVEL REQUIREMENTS

THE NEED FOR WI-FI REQUIREMENTS
• Many communication level requirements for WiFi
technology already specified by bodies such as
IEEE802.11 and WiFi Alliance
• Additional, system level requirements for mobile
networks specified by 3GPP, such as ANDSF
• Strong need for system-level WiFi requirements also
for home gateways and home networks
– Unique use cases
– Badly specified home gateways lead to many help-desk
calls and operational costs
• HGI has been the primary body for specifying systemlevel WiFi requirements for home gateways and home
networks
2
HGI WI-FI REQUIREMENTS CAN BE FOUND IN:
• RD-001 Home Gateway Technical Requirements: Residential
Profile
– Soon updated by RD-044
• RD-012 QoS and Multicast Requirements for Home
Network Infrastructure Devices
• RD-027 Home Gateway QoS Module Requirements
• RD-039 Requirements for Wireless Home Area Networks
(WHANs) Supporting Smart Home Services
– Further explained in Duncan Bees’ talk today
• RD-045 Wi-Fi Requirements for Home Gateways Automatic Channel Selection and Repeaters
– Soon updated by RD-045v2 also including requirements for
channel measurements
• RD-057 Wi-Fi System Requirements for Home Gateways –
NFC Pairing, Guest Access, Hotspot
3
WI-FI REQUIREMENTS IN RD-044
• RD-044 specifies basic home gateway requirements
• Includes 30 Wi-Fi related requirements, covering, for
instance:
– Dual band ( 2x2 2.4 GHz and 3x3 5 GHz)
– Support for 802.11a, b, -g, -n, and –ac
– Mandatory Automatic Channel Selection (ACS) as specified in
RD-045
– WPA2 Personal
– WMM Power Save
– Single WPS push button
– Configurable as client/repeater, if necessary with same SSID as
other APs/repeaters in the house
• Mandatory IEEE 1905.1 for automatic repeater configuration
– At least 3 SSIDs, which should be extensively configurable
– For Mid-Range and High-End Home Gateways: Packet
forwarding performance requirements for Wi-Fi <-> Wired LAN
4
WI-FI REQUIREMENTS IN RD-012 AND RD-027
• Mapping priority markings
• Home Gateways as well as HNIDs must be able to
classify packets based on LAN type (including Wi-Fi)
• Home Gateways must also be able to classify based on
SSID
• HNIDs must support IP Multicast to L2 Unicast
conversion over the Wi-Fi link
5
WI-FI REQUIREMENTS IN RD-045V2
• Applicable to Home Gateways as well as standalone APs
• Currently ACS is vendor-specific, and performance varies among
implementations
• Automatic Channel Selection requirements
– 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz
– Algorithms and configurability requirements for both static and
dynamic ACS
– Support for Channel Switch Announcement (CSA)
• Channel measurement techniques as in IEEE 802.11
– Clear Channel Assessment (CCA)
– Average Noise Power Indicator (ANPI)
– Detailed reporting and remote management requirements
• Repeater interoperability requirements

Performance requirements
Support of all sub-bands in 5 GHz
Passphrase PSK in case the SSID of the repeater is (chosen to be)
different from AP
WI-FI REQUIREMENTS IN RD-057
• NFC in HG for enabling easy Wi-Fi pairing
– The HG must embed an NFC tag to support WPS pairing with NFC
Reader devices as specified by WFA
– Additional requirements with respect to SSID management, default
settings, and configurability
– Support of Mediated Connection
• Guest Access
– 2 use cases: guest at home gets own SSID, or guest at establishment
gets access to Wi-FI
– Requirements on proper separation of guest and home network
• Hotspot
