Transcript How the Internet Works
NOTES (DNEWS)
Interconnected network of computers – The Internet
Servers - hosts
They store websites and transfer data to clients
Millions host nodes across the planet – Individuals, Companies, Governments
No single entity owns the internet
NOTES (DNEWS)
Wired directly
Modem has unique IP Address
Connected via cable or DSL to another modem at the internet service provider
LSP has local connection points – Windowless climate-controlled buildings filled
with computers (Point of Presence)
ISP modems are networked together with fibre optic cable to a network access
point
Another node
All come together to connect – Enlarge Network – Internet Backbone
Trunk cables on the floor of the world’s ocean – Alight with data – Speed of light
NOTES (DNEWS)
Type a site
Text translated into packet
Packet sent to ISP
Routes packets somewhere else in the system
Data can split and travel to the same place
DNS finds out what the site’s IP address is
Data goes through POP & Nap
Access site computers – Site takes over and pulls data from own computers
WHAT WE MIGHT NEED TO CONNECT TO THE
INTERNET
USB Broadband Modem
ADSL Modem/Router
DSL/Cable Modem
Ethernet

Router
INTERNET CONNECTION METHODS
Wireless - Wireless-enabled devices use this to connect to the internet. There are no
wires required to connect, as the name suggests.
Broadband - Wired connection to a broadband supplier. Usually through a network
card in the computer, though Cable users have an Ethernet connection.
Dial-Up - Wired connection via telephone line which requires a modem.
