used for connecting to the Internet. ADSL allows more
data to be sent over existing copper telephone lines
HYPERLINK

a link from a hypertext file or document to
another location or file, typically activated by
clicking on a highlighted word or image on the
screen.


A conference call is a telephone call in which the
calling party wishes to have more than one called
party listen in to the audio portion of the call.
BINARY

relating to, using, or expressed in a system of
numerical notation that has 2 rather than 10 as a
base.
BLUETOOTH

a standard for the short-range wireless
interconnection of cellular phones, computers,
and other electronic devices.
COOKIE

When a user accesses a website with
a cookie function for the first time, a cookie is
sent from server to the browser and stored with
the browser in the local computer. Later when
that user goes back to the same website, the
website will recognize the user because of the
stored cookie with the user's information.


the use of dedicated websites and applications to

TWITTER

Twitter is an online social networking service
that enables users to send and read short 140character messages called "tweets". Registered
users can read and post tweets, but unregistered
users can only read them.
ADWARE

software that automatically displays or
downloads advertising material (often unwanted)
when a user is online.
ASCII

ASCII (American Standard Code for Information
Interchange) is the most common format for text
files in computers and on the Internet. In
an ASCII file, each alphabetic, numeric, or
special character is represented with a 7-bit
binary number (a string of seven 0s or 1s). 128
possible characters are defined.
BANDWIDTH

bandwidth refers to the data rate that is
supported by the network connection or the
interfaces that connect to the network.
Thismeaning of bandwidth is usually
expressed in bits (of data) per second (bps).

bulletin board system: a computerized facility,
accessible by modem, for collecting and relaying
electronic messages and software programs
CODEC

a device or program that compresses data to
enable faster transmission and decompresses
received data.
URL

A uniform resource locator is a specific character
string that constitutes a reference to a resource. Most
web browsers display the URL of a web page above the
page in an address bar.
FTP

Short for File Transfer Protocol, the protocol for
exchanging files over the Internet. FTP works in the
same way as HTTP for transferring Web pages from a
server to a user's browser
INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER

An Internet service provider is a business or
organization that offers users access to the
Internet and related services. Many but not all
ISPs are telephone companies or other
telecommunication providers.
KEYBORED

a panel of keys that operate a computer or
typewriter.
STREAMING

a method of transmitting or receiving data
(especially video and audio material) over a
computer network as a steady, continuous flow,
allowing playback to proceed while subsequent
data is being received.
WORLD WIDE WEB

an information system on the Internet that
allows documents to be connected to other
documents by hypertext links, enabling the user
to search for information by moving from one
document to another.
