Radio Frequency IDentification
 Uses radio waves to automatically
transfer data between RFID tags and
readers
 Radio not optical – doesn't require
line-of-site
 Tags can be read through snow, fog,
ice, paint, dust
 ‘Passive’ tags and ‘active’ tags
 Enables tagged items to be tracked
and information to be collected
automatically – even when items are
on the move
 Know the location and status of items
in real time

We see visibility as today’s value chain problem
… seeing a problem is 90% of fixing it!
Poor visibility across the supply chain
Lack of transaction velocity
Inefficient capacity to optimise and synchronise supply
chain activity
Poor supply chain control and accountability
Black holes and high costs

RFID trial in Portugal: Comboios De Portugal
Increase operational efficiency and safety
CP instituted an RFID stock management system that improved
traceability and reliability of replacement parts for their rolling stock
RFID tags had to be able to withstand the harsh rail environment –
vibration, high temperature and the impact of high speed objects
Maintenance efficiency enhanced
RFID tags periodically read
ID cross-checked with data base
information
Enables CP to easily verify when
components need to be replaced
or maintained
Improves reliability of
maintenance history
Able to quickly locate parts

Disaster can result if you don’t get it right
• RFID caused interference to the nearby
Vodafone telephone tower
• What if this were a critical part of a rail operational
network?
• Internal (operational) as well as external (commercial)
systems need to be tested and protected
