What is EGO?

Computing for VIRGO will be done at different locations. The Cascina site is in
charge of on line and in time analysis of data. The off-line activity will be
performed mainly in the national computing centers (actually the CCIN2P3/CNRS in Lyon and the Tier1 center of CNAF/INFN in Bologna) and in the
laboratories of the VIRGO collaboration.

The off-line activity concerns
-Data simulation
-Noise source characterization of the interferometer
-Data reprocessing for h reconstruction, transient event search as bursts and
coalescing binary signals,
-Data analysis for continuous signal search
-Data analysis for G.W. stochastic background
-Data analysis of network constituted by the various gravitational wave detectors in
the world (NDAS)

The computing needs for the off-line activities are defined according to the quoted relevant documents . The procedures
agreed by the Parties for this engagement are as follows:
Requests by the VIRGO collaboration will be defined by a VIRGO Computing Committee (now JECC), which will report to
the EGO Council and monitor their utilization.
EGO after receiving the requests from the JECC, will decide yearly on the resources needed for off-line activities.
The Parties will make their best effort to provide yearly these resources.
In particular:

EGO will provide the suitable infrastructures and adequate computing resources and storage for on line and in time
analysis, as it is defined in the VIRGO computing plan (VIR-PLA-DIR –7000-122, November 2001) and in the
VIRGO Computing Needs for 2003-2004 (VIR-LIS-XXX, October 3 2003) and future updating.
The national centers (presently the CC/IN2P3 in Lyon and CNAF/INFN in Bologna) will provide computing resources
to the VIRGO collaboration on a marginal cost basis.
INFN and IN2P3/CNRS will make their best effort to provide the computing resources needed locally at the VIRGO
Laboratories.
EGO will include the computing costs in its yearly budget. The offline computing costs will normally be shared
equally between the two national centers.
Any extra computing resources that national centers could provide beyond the agreed annual request will be
granted free of charge, on a best effort basis.

“Based on Virgo requests and assuming a substitution of about 50TB in each center for 2012, and adding 120TB
tapes for Cnaf, a minimum of 43k€ has to be foreseen in the EGO budget for 2012.
Finally it is observed that the agreement between EGO and CC’s was valid until end 2009 and due to the fact that
Virgo runs each year, it was tacitly renewed for 2010-2011”
