VOIP – What is it, and Why do we need it?

VoIP – Voice over IP (Internet Protocol) – is simply the transmission of voice traffic
over IP-based networks
Current PBX Systems are End-of-Life
 No Investment by Telecom Manufacturers in Legacy Voice systems
 Spare parts are refurbished and are increasingly becoming less available
 Fewer Trained Technicians
 Increased Risk of a Multi-Day Outage Increases
Capacity Issues with Current Systems and Associated Costs
Consumer-Driven Capabilities Moving into the Enterprise
 Reach-me-anytime, e-mail, IM/chat, presence, personal directories, all consumer
driven technologies, are now available in the commercial space
Disaster Recovery and Enterprise Redundancy
 SRST – Survivability of up to 250 phones vs currently the 16 today
Integrated Network and Communications
Other Considerations to migrate to VoIP

PHS Architecture
 Primary and backup servers split across datacenters
 Voicemail servers split across datacenters

Advanced features and services – you now have a baseline infrastructure to provide
add-on services such as:
 Mobility/Wireless
 Soft-Phones – Phone on your PC

Follow me services – Your office phone can be on your soft-phone, hand-held Wifi
phone, phone at home and your smartphone

Call Center services – call centers can become virtual and have Agents stationed
anywhere in the network including at home

Use of SIP – Session Initiation Protocol
 Reduces Carrier toll rates by 43%
 Allows integration to other Unified Communications systems. I.e. Voalte,
Vocera, Lync
Integrated Network and Communications
TDM to VoIP Migration Project - Status
