What is SNMP
Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is a popular protocol for network
management.
It is used for collecting information from, and configuring, network devices, such as
servers, printers, hubs, switches, and routers on an IP (Internet Protocol) network.

Some SNMP Terminology
• Agent: A process that monitors devices for problems\information’s and sends alerts
to a monitoring station.
• OID: SNMP works by querying “Objects”. An object is simply something that we can
gather information about on a network device. For instance, an object might be
something like “PC Name”.
• MIB: A MIB is like a translator that helps a Management Station to understand
SNMP responses obtained from your network devices. All SNMP devices generally
Support MIB-2, which is a standard set of objects that can be monitored.
• MIB Browser (or MIB Walker): A tool that can pull data from SNMP enabled
devices, helping to identify which objects respond to a query.
• Polling: An NMS will poll, or ask devices for their status regularly.
• Trap: SNMP sends a trap, or unsolicited message sent from an agent to a
management station when some important event is detected. This is the opposite of
polling.

Desigo CC – SNMP limitations
Current Desigo CC version has the following restrictions:
 It cannot act as SNMP Agent (provide SNMP info to 3° party NMS)
 It does not support SNMP Traps (spontaneous SNMP notifications)
 It does not provide SNMP Set functionality (SNMP commanding)
The above functionalities are currently listed as requirements for Desigo CC
and they will be evaluated for future Desigo CC versions.
