Review For (*gasp!*) The Test
Remember to study tonight!
I’m expecting great things from you!
The Internet
• A specific worldwide collection of
interconnected computers whose owners
have voluntarily agreed to share resources
and network connections with each other.
3 types of cabling used in
networking
• Twisted pair
• Coaxial
• Fiber-optic.
LAN and WAN? What is the
difference between them?
• LAN
• a Local Area Network, refers to a
network of computers interconnected
with each other through direct
connections with the NIC’s. Because
direct connections through NIC’s only
work over short distances (usually less
than 1000 feet), LAN’s can only work
for computers in the same location.
LAN and WAN? What is the
difference between them?
• WAN
• a Wide Area Network is a network of
networks, called an internet (lower case
“i”) which is short for interconnected
network. WAN can be geographically
distributed with no real limit on
distance.
A server?
• A server is the main computer in a
LAN to which the other computers
in the LAN are connected.
• It has special software that
manages the connections between
all the other computers.
3 services provided by most ISP's
to their customers.
• access to the internet
• software the customers need to connect
to the internet, browse the web, and
send and receive email
• network consulting services to their
customers
• design of webpages
• network management, training and
marketing advice
TCP/IP? What does each do and
who developed them?
• Transmission Control Protocol
• Internet Protocol.
• TCP includes rules by which computers
on a network establish and break
connections.
• IP includes rules for routing of
individual data packets.
• They were developed by Vincent Cerf
and Robert Kahn.
What was the first GUI program
that could read HTML? When
was it developed?
• Mosaic
• Developed in 1993.
7 types of Internet connections in
order, starting with the slowest.
• Regular telephone service (dialup)
• Integrated Services Digital Network
(ISDN)
• Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line
(ADSL or DSL)
• Cable Modem
• T1 leased line
• T3 leased line
• Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) Line
Where are the 4 Network Access Points
(NAP) of the Internet backbone in the
U.S.? Who controls them?
• San Francisco
– operated by PacBell
• Chicago
– operated by Ameritech
• New York City
– operated by Sprint
• Washington, D.C.
– operated by MFS
2 things you can accomplish with
HTML tags
• Formatting your web page.
• Establishing a hyperlink on your
page to another page.
5 top-level domain names and
what they stand for:
• .com
– commercial

Where would you save an
address to a web site that you
frequently visit?
• In the “Favorites” list on Internet
Explorer
• In the “Bookmarks” list on
Netscape
One of the following IP addresses
is valid and one is not. Explain
why.
• 123.321.123.56
• 123.43.23.254
• 123.321.123.56 is not valid because the
number 321 cannot be in an IP address.
It’s higher than 255.
• 123.43.23.254 is valid because it
contains no number higher than 255.
None of the four numbers in the IP
address can exceed 255.
What happens when you press
the "Refresh" button in Microsoft
Internet Explorer?
• The refresh button checks to see if the
web page currently being viewed has
changed on the web server since being
loaded locally into the cache folder,
where it usually pulls web pages from
(for the sake of speed).
• If the page has changed at all, the
Refresh button loads the new page into
the cache from the remote web server.
